Irina Sanders, Chairman of the Association of Interpreters and Translators (AIT), will be a speaker at The Intermediary Cooperative Annual Conference in June.
AIT was established by Irina and a group of colleagues five years ago with the primary objective of raising awareness of the profession.
Among the organisation’s aims are achieving and maintaining protection of title and the regulation of the profession by helping to raise the skill and passion of interpreters and translators.
Under Irina’s tireless leadership, AIT links members with professional training courses, CPD training, networking opportunities and much more.
It has also developed partnerships with a range of organisations and forums including the International Federation of Translators (FIT), FIT Europe – Regional Centre for Europe of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA), Professional Interpreters for Justice (PI4J), Public Service Interpreters and Translators Group (PSIT) and the MOJ Language Services External Stakeholder Forum.
Irina’s presentation at The Intermediary Cooperative’s Annual Conference on Friday, June 27, at the University of Liverpool School of Law & Social Justice is entitled “Stakeholders’ Collaboration: Dialogue, Support and Best Practice”.
Irina will talk about joint collaborative working between interpreters and other professionals in the justice system and how that can promote best practice when working with vulnerable individuals in court.
The presentation will highlight AIT’s advocacy for the interpreting and translation profession, focusing on professional regulation, protection of title, and skill development.
Irina will also showcase AIT’s policy influence, such as its engagement with the House of Lords inquiry into court interpreting services, reinforcing its commitment to raising professional standards along with the need for improved working conditions and remuneration.
Irina says: “You simply cannot overstate the importance of collaboration. Learning about different organisations’ best practices can only be done by sharing these practices with each other.
“We recently welcomed TIC intermediary Dr Tina Pereira to talk to our members in which she shared her thoughts about how the working relationship between intermediary and interpreter or translator can work most effectively. We’ve also helped to develop a series of videos for use by TIC in training new intermediaries including role playing different scenarios.
“I’m a big believer in the need for constant, ongoing learning and dialogue. There are always new people coming into our profession and other professions or new legislation or procedures that we need to be aware of.
“Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is essential in any profession to achieve and maintain the highest possible standards.
“I’m looking forward to joining delegates at TIC’s annual conference and helping to further strengthen links with intermediaries and other partners across the justice system.”
